When Mesh Consulting Auckland needed a sustainable, cost-effective hot water solution for the new YMCA Christchurch building (now the Kind Foundation), Rheem 3-phase commercial heat pumps were the clear choice. The system delivers reliable, energy-efficient performance, which aligned perfectly with the project’s sustainability goals and budget.
Located on the corner of Hagley Park and Cashel Street, this standout facility supports a wide range of users and functions. Mesh Consulting considered the needs of the users, the client’s desire to ensure the building delivered on energy efficiency principles, and the physical space awarded to plant within the building envelope.
Their clever use of plant room space, creating a floor above the plant room floor, allowed for the cold discharge air to be released and not impact on the appliance’s operation, ensuring optimum efficiency while providing for the needs of the users. It also made the system easy to service in the longer term.
The Rheem 16kW air-to-water heat pumps (3 of them) with top discharge now supply all the building’s potable hot water. Delivering an impressive 600L per hour at a 50°C rise during Christchurch’s winter (and up to 900L per hour in summer), this system is a real credit to everyone involved in its design and installation.
The installation was completed by Aquapro Christchurch, a company known for excellence in high pressure performance, and working with property managers, architectural builders, and partnering on large-scale commercial projects. They had no problems configuring the storage tanks being on a different level from the heat pumps.
